Its been ages since I last updated this blog. I have a canoe trip coming up this weekend so I thought this is the right time and place to update about it and provide the details to my fellow 'canoeists'.
On Friday, June 19, 2009 Sushanth, Raja, Shiva, Prasanna and myself are starting for a two day canoeing trip on Kansas river. We will be starting around 7:00 pm from the Manhattan US24 docking point and ending the following day at Wamego US99 docking point. We will have to find a place to camp before the sunset. So it is advisable to hit the river as early as possible.
I have reserved two tandem canoes (each tandem canoe accommodates two people) and one single kayak for two days from the K-state outdoor rental center. We will have to pick them up on Friday between 4:00-6:00 pm, which is when they are open. I have not reserved any camping paraphernalia yet but I am assuming we can get them when we go to pick up canoes. We will need three cars to carry two canoes and one kayak. The outdoor rental center will provide us with the car top carriers.
Here is the map of the Kansas River, a part of which we will be coursing:

We will put in our canoes at the Hwy 24 Blue River boat ramp and access point and take out at the Wamego Hwy 99 bridge as shown in the following two maps.

Here is a link to the forecast for weather on Friday and Saturday from Accuweather:
Note that the UV and mosquito indices are quite high! A note on the attire. Plan on wearing quick-drying pants/shorts. Shirt is optional! A hat/bandana is a must. No flip-flops please! If you are planning on getting into the water, I strongly recommend sandals or shoes.
I have prepared the following checklist for this canoeing/camping trip. If you think of something that I have missed, leave me a comment. I am taking the responsibility of getting all the stuff unless otherwise stated in parentheses.

I would suggest that we get a three person canoe and a two person canoe instead of the kayak. The kayak not only costs us extra but cannot be used for any luggage and will only further complicate things.
Does everyone has their own sleeping bag?? I wouldnt trust the sleeping bags from the outdoor rec they are not that clean.
We can also check out the ice-cooler from the outdoor rec along with lantern and pocket knifes. Lighter fluid for camp fire and lots of mosquito repellent. I wish we had the "jet- mosquito repellent coils".....there should be some other brand available in Wally world.
Democracy! Majority wanted two two-person canoes and they will get it! We have to rent 4 sleeping bags, 2 tents, and lantern from rec center. I am not sure if rec has a pocket knife to rent. They didnt list it on the list of items they rent out.
"Democracy! Majority wanted two two-person canoes and they will get it! "
WTF....where was my VOTE??? Is this the same way we "unanimously" (read Sushanth Gudlur) decided on our fun cricket team name??? ;)
I guess majority is the law of the land here, as with every other election where only 40% of the people express thier right to vote and of which 55% decide, which in a broader sense accounts for only 22% of the population.......in which case the only person voted will be the majority. Given we are 6 people I guess Raj saying it and Malreddy agreeing does count for more than 33% in which case they have a "fair right" to say majority. Go democracy.......I still persist with my reason of having a three person canoe.......makes the trip much more fun.
For more rules on voting and majority......please refer to roberts rules of order (newly revised)..here is the link
